soar
About the Show
soar is rooted in presence and accountability. Together, we ask: what becomes possible when we lead and follow at once? Through emotionally-driven research Lamont and Lyzah invite new movement pathways, shaped by mutual influence of Latin Hustle and Contact Improvisation. Moving through intimacy as both assertion and surrender; finding strong offerings to lead with clarity and listen with depth. Simultaneous giving and receiving, the research serves as a place to support each other in flight.
From the beginning, the artists’ work has been as much about creating a staged performance as it is about learning from local communities in so-called “Vancouver” and “Montreal”, and sharing those learnings in return. For soar, Lyzah and Lamont invite the audience to engage in the work in a way that draws inspiration from these streams of learning, creating, and sharing.
Event Details
6:30-7:00pm Doors
Come in, settle down, grab a drink!
7:00pm Creative Exchange
Lyzah and Lamont are asking: what can we learn from the audience?
In this suspended moment, you’re invited to bring your own supplies — to draw, paint, write poetry, or collage in response to what unfolds. These creations will contribute to a collective zine, a living record that continues the creative inquiry beyond the night.
The room will be arranged like a life drawing session: in the round, with cushions, tables and chairs for everyone. Forgot your supplies? No stress — there will be a small stash on hand to share. *This portion of the evening may contain partial nudity.
At some point – the energy shifts.
Lyzah and Lamont will then move through a score blending improvisation and choreography, inviting you to witness however feels right — continue sketching, writing, or simply take it in. The movement will become more dynamic and virtuosic, exploring insistence and collapse in the physical and emotional connection, using weight-bearing and spins as metaphors for care, escape, flight.
8:45pm Movement Exchange
August 29th – Contact Improv Jam
August 30th- Hustle Social
To close the night, Lyzah and Lamont return to the movement forms at the root of their practice. Come dance, share, and play — no matter your experience level, you’re welcome on the floor.
If you’re just coming for the jam, suggestion to arrive at 8:45pm.
