Dominique Wakeland

POSTPONED DUE TO COVID-19

Throughout this residency, Dominique wants to explore the idea of the New Minstrel, and Internet Blackface–a term that took off last year. It can be obvious onstage when a white drag queen is being more Donna Summers than Madonna. What is it about Blackness that invites this ‘theft’? They will take the time at What Lab to investigate what is it about performing Blackness that holds such power, and how to get it back and keep it.

Dominique Wakeland (they/them) was born on unceded Kwantlen territory and is a graduate of Simon Fraser University’s Theatre Performance program. Dom is a poet/ Drag artist/ and theatre creator. Their practice is fundamentally movement and text based with an emphasis on the politics we bring in our bodies and how that manifests into knowledge.
